Byes are drawn, not given

With an odd number of entrants somebody sits out the first round. Handing that to the organiser’s friend is how a tournament gets a reputation; drawing it in public is how it does not.

The whole list is shuffled once and then read in pairs, which makes every possible bracket equally likely. Pairing people off one at a time would not.

First round only

Later rounds depend on who wins, and this page does not know that. Draw again with the survivors when the round is done.
