Random Chess Square

One of the sixty-four. The classic drill is to name the colour before you look — this will tell you if you were right.

The colour is arithmetic, not a lookup

A square is light when the file number and the rank add up to an odd number. a1 is dark, h8 is dark, and the whole board follows from that one rule.

Drawing without putting back is on by default, so a run of sixty-four presses visits every square exactly once.

Why anybody drills this

Knowing a square’s colour without counting is what lets a player read a bishop’s reach at a glance. It is a minute a day for a week, and then it is permanent.

Everything runs on your device and nothing is sent anywhere.
