Two at a time is the whole trick

Ranking eight things at once is a task nobody can do, which is why the list has been sitting there. Choosing between two is a question anybody can answer in a second, and enough of those answers is a ranking.

The pairs come up in a random order so the first comparison does not anchor the rest. What is random here is which question you are asked, not the answer.

Stop when the top is clear

You almost never need the whole order. Once the first two are settled the page has done its job — the bottom of a to-do list sorts itself out by being ignored.

The list stays in this browser and is never sent anywhere.
