A countdown whose length nobody knows, including you. For games where the buzzer must not be predictable, and for work where the clock is the point.

A timer you can see counting down changes how people play: everybody watches the last five seconds instead of the game. Hiding the length until it rings puts the attention back where it belongs.
The length is drawn before the countdown starts, so pausing the tab or switching away cannot make it longer or shorter.
The countdown is worked out from the clock rather than from frames, so a tab that stopped being drawn still rings on time.
Nothing is sent anywhere and no notification is asked for — the sound and the page are all it uses.
