Situations, not themes

"Write about loss" is a subject, and a subject is somewhere you can stare at for an hour. Every prompt here puts somebody somewhere with a problem, which is a first sentence you can actually write.

No prompt names a genre. The same situation becomes a comedy or a ghost story depending on who picks it up, and being told which one to write is the fastest way to stop.

Ignore it after the first paragraph

The prompt has done its job once the page is no longer blank. Nothing here is a brief, and following one to the end usually produces the dullest version of it.
